The Book Man (or Captain Book)

Book, love?” he said.

Caroline couldn't say a word. He was drop dead gorgeous, this man at the book stall, and rogue-ish to boot. She could more easily see him in captain's garb on the deck of a pirate ship, or as a highwayman clad in velvet lace, than as a purveyor of secondhand books.

Nothing you like? What type of books do you usually read?”

Caroline looked at him as though he was speaking gibberish.

You do speak English, don't you?”

Of course,” she answered. “It is just that you are not the type of bookseller I normally see at these fairs. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen you at one of these before today.”

Probably not, love,” he sighed. “I rarely leave the store these days. But I decided to get out for a change, see a bit of sunshine, speak to some lovely ladies.”

He winked, and Caroline felt her face grow alarmingly warm.

W-w-where is your shop?” Damn, she was stammering like a teenager girl. “I haven't seen you in this village.”

No, you wouldn't. It is in the city, in High Street. I named it Captain Book.”

He smiled disarmingly and Caroline was suddenly on guard. He clearly knew the image he projected and no doubt was quite aware of his effect on the opposite sex. She cursed herself for being so gullible.

Oh, I rarely can be bothered to go into the city these days.” she said haughtily. “Too noisy, dirty and much too pretentious.”

And that's the truth, isn't it love. Still, can I interest you in a book right now? Perhaps a gothic romance? With a highwayman or a pirate?”

She glared at him. “Not my keep of tea at all. Do you have anything on temporal physics?” She was starting to hate this smug man.

What? You'd like to go back and start this all over again?”

Caroline scowled, turned on her heel and flounced off. She could him laughing and calling after her.

Now, don't be like that, love.”

What a hateful, hateful beast.
