Interview with Life

Ned Bullivant: Welcome everyone. We have a truly stupendous show tonight. I have here in the studio none other than Life his- or her-self. So tell us, Life, which is it?

Life: Well Ned - I may call you Ned? (Ned nods.) Well Ned, I’m kinda gender free. More of an It than a He or a She.

Ned: OK folks, so there we have it - Life IT-self. (The audience applauds.) So I guess the question on everyone’s lips is "What is the meaning of life?"

Life: I don’t really like being thought of as having only a single meaning. I mean, questions about meaning are demeaning. I’m all about experiencing - the here and now, love, inspiration, joy, even sorrow and grief. It's about noticing the infinitesimal moments adding up to something that is unique to you and you alone. Moments adding up to YOUR life.

Ned: So you are saying that life is meaningless?

Life: No, Ned. I’m saying meaning is a journey, not a destination.

Ned: I thought life was a journey, not a destination.

Life: I know that's the popular interpretation but it is meaning which is the journey. All you need to do on that journey is to pay attention to whatever it is that makes you feel rich with hope and understanding. Pay attention to the little things, to the small moments, as well as to the bleedin’-obvious-hit-you-in-the-face-with-a-frozen-fish ones.

Ned: So that’s it, huh? Really? That is all you have to say?! Well, this has been a huge waste of time.

Life: If that is what your life is, Ned, then I’m sorry for you. I think you --

Ned puts his hand over Life’s mouth and turns to the camera.

Ned: Time for a commercial break, folks. Let’s get back to the real world.
